Little Maycie Lou gave us a serious scare. We had a friend over for a play date on Wednesday morning and afterwards when I went to put her down for naps I noticed her cheek bone and eye lid were a little red, as if she bumped it on something. I asked her what happened but she didn't know. I put her down for naps, but went to check on her an hour later and her eye was nearly swollen shut. I immediately started panicking, called a babysitter(Daddy was in meetings and I couldn't get a hold of him), and took her straight to InstaCare. The InstaCare doctor didn't seem too worried about it and said that it was probably just an allergic reaction to something that flew in her eye. She gave me an oral steroid to give her, along with benadryl, and sent us on our way. She said that it shouldn't get any worse but that if it did we should bring her back in for further examination.
That night we went to bed but checked her about every two hours. I went to check on her again at 7:30 in the morning and the swelling had almost doubled. At this point I was really concerned so Jess stayed with the boys while I took her to Primary Children's Emergency Room. The doctors were very concerned from the second we got there because of how distorted her face was. The quickly admitted her and started running tests. They had the head ophthalmologist from the Miran Eye Center across the street come over to examine her. He quickly sent her to CT to make sure the infection hadn't gotten to her eye. They started an IV which took about 30 minutes and 6 of us holding her down to get it inserted; it looked like a crime scene by the time they finally got it in. She then continued to try to pull it out so they had to sedate her and put her arm in a splint type thing so she wouldn't be tempted to pull at it. The CT room was so cute! There was a swinging monkey on the wall to go with the pirate island theme to distract her. They gave her a teddy bear to hold and wrapped both of them in some blankets to keep from wiggling during the CT. The radiologist had her repeat, "Hold still Bear", while she walked Jake and the Neverland Pirates" on a TV in the pirate ship CT scan. She actually loved every minute of the CT and asked to do it again afterwards.
Once all of the tests came back, we were told it was periorbital cellulitis which could have been very bad if we would have waited any longer to bring her in. Its initially an infection that moves from the front of the eye around to the back; once it gets to the back, the swelling is so strong that it cuts of the blood vessels to the eye which causes complete loss of vision. Luckily, Maycie's had only made it about 3/4 of the way back to the eye, so they were able to get stronger steroids to her quickly through the IV to stop the infection from spreading. They kept her over night to monitor her, but she loved all the attention and having her brothers, Daddy, and Grandma Janee come visit her.
The next morning it was down to nearly half of the swelling, and by the third day home she looked like our Maycie Lou again. Because this has happened now and we know about it, if it happens again, which is very likely, we know to just take her straight up and get her hooked up to an IV. We're so glad we got our gorgeous girl back, even though she was still the prettiest one in there, inside and out. We love her adorable little eyes SO much!
