Kasen's Seizure

Last Wednesday night the kids were running across he bridge upstairs and Kasen randomly fell, started whining, then had a seizure. He stopped whining, his eyes went to the right then rolled to the back of his head, his joints locked up, his hands turned in, fingers curled up, and he started seizing. It lasted less than ten seconds but was the scariest moment in my life. When it was over, he came to fairly quickly then started crying and yelling "Momma". The rest of the night he was fine and he didn't have any sort of symptoms in the days following. We went to the pediatricians office the next morning and he referred us to a neurologist at Primary Children's Hospital the following week.
Today we met with the neurologist, Dr. Nielson, and he let us know that Kasen had a Grand Mal Seizure. He had Kasen do three tests to investigate further, which made for a really long day at the doctors for a 2 year old. The first test was an EEG. They glued wires all over Kasen's head then wrapped it so he hopefully wouldn't mess with them. He obviously threw a huge fit over them, but after about 20 minutes of wrestling him and giving him an iPad to watch, he finally calmed down and let them do the hour long scan. If that came back abnormal, then it meant we treat Kasen for epilepsy. The next was an EKG to see if his heart was pumping enough blood to the brain or if there was a possible blood clot. They put wires all over his chest and back. This test was shorter so Kasen didn't put up much of a fight, but he sure was not happy about it and kept giving Mom and stink eye. The last thing they test for was his iron levels. The took some blood which Kasen didn't like, but it was by far the fastest test of the day.
Luckily the EEG and the EKG came back "pretty normal", so no cause for immediate concern until he has another seizure in the near future. His iron levels did come back extremely off though so hopefully that's what caused the seizure because that is the easiest fix. We have to give Kasen iron medication for 4 weeks then he will always need to take a multivitamin with iron in it, but we will definitely take this over another seizure or epilepsy. This little 2 year old has such a sweet heart and we're glad we get to keep him safe in our house thanks to modern medicine.
